Vision & Mission

Our vision is that all children achieve success in life.

Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

We partner with parents/guardians, volunteers and other sin the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving:

  • Higher aspirations;
  • Greater confidence;
  • Better relationships;
  • Avoidance of risky behaviors; and
  • Educational success.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is not your typical organization. We help children realize their potential and build their futures. We nurture children and strengthen communities.

We believe that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters live in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”).

A 2009 study conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters found that adults who were matched for at least one year as children report that having a Big Brother or Big Sister played an integral role in who they are today by positively influencing their self-confidence, providing stability, changing their perspective on life and pushing them to set higher goals.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the ONLY Best Practice prevention program in Montana proven to impact a broad spectrum of risk factors (i.e. delinquency; alcohol, tobacco and drug use; teen pregnancy, and school drop out) while simultaneously helping children reach their highest potential. As such, the return on investment is higher across the board than dollars invested in single issue prevention programs.

History

It was more than century ago, on December 3, 1904, in Lower Manhattan. A boy's life hung in the balance, the weight of an 18-month reformatory sentence about to crush his future. Then Ernest Coulter, Clerk of the Court of Special Sessions of the City of New York, made his famous plea:

"There is only one possible way to save that youngster, and that is to have some earnest, true man volunteer to be his big brother. To look after him, to help him do right, to make the little chap feel that there is at least one human being in this great city who takes a personal interest in him, who cares whether he lives or dies. I call for a volunteer."

When the first gentleman stood to volunteer, Big Brothers of New York City began. Coulter's audience, a New York City men's club of business and community leaders, immediately saw the strength of this brave new idea. By the end of the day, 39 men had volunteered, and thus 39 futures were salvaged.

Eight years later, in June of 1912, Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt helped to form the Big Sisters organization. In 1921, the Big Brother and Big Sister Federation incorporated in New York State.

There now are hundreds of Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flathead County has been serving our community since 1978.

Leadership - Board of Directors

 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flathead County has an active working Board that is driven by a passionate vision to work towards a community in which adults share a sense of responsibility for the well-being of children.  Since 1978 almost 1,400 children have known the friendship and support of a Big Brother, Big Sister or Lunch Pail Pal. The impact of these relationships within our community is well founded, with many of the BBBS “Littles” continuing the legacy of community service that they learn from their “Big.”
